  1st day

  Piazza-Venezia- A most impressive square in which situated a big white statue as a memory of  Vittorio

Emanuelle ll (the first king of united Italy) that appears from it a spectacular

scenery, and in the center situated the anonymous soldier grave. The square

is surrounded by the palaces: Palazzo Bonaparte, Palazzo delle Assicurazioni, Generali di Venezia, Palazzo Venezia from the 15th century, that today hosts

the museum of art collections from the middle ages until the 17th century.

 

Hours: Tuesday-Sunday 8.30-19.00.

Transportation: Bus 30, 62, 64, 70, 87.

 

  Continue in Via del Fori Imperiali toward the Colosseo.

 

  On the way pass next to the caesarean forums (squares surrounded by Column)- Trajan's column,  Trajan's market,

  Foro di Cesara.

  Colosseo-  An Amphitheater that was built by the order of  Caesar Vespasian. It was inaugurated in A.D 80 .

The 3 levels structure was an arena for combats between gladiators and wild beasts, races and more.  

Before the entrance to the colosseum notice the Arch of Constantine which situated in the square of the Colosseo.

The tour can last about 2- 3 hours.

  At the exit from the Colosseo situated the Foro Romano.

 

  Foro Romano- The remnants of what used to be the religious, political and commercial center of ancient Rome.

  Hours: Summer 9.00-19.30. Winter 9.00-16.30. Free entrance.

  It's possible to go up on to the Palatino hill, the site in which Rome was founded. In this place where Romulus

  and Remus were discovered, established the Caesar Domitianus the caesarean palace. From Farnese Gardens

  that were made in the 16th century there is a panoramic view of the forum and the city.

  Hours: Summer 9.00-19.30. Winter 9.00-16.30. Entrance by payment.

 

  The tour in the Colosseo and in the forums lasts about 4 hours.

 

  Exit the Foro Romano in via del Fori Imperiali and return to Piazza-Venezia

  From the square turn to Via del Tetro di Marcello. In the left side situated steps that go up to the

  Campidoglio- On the Capitoline Hill situated Santa Maria d'Aracoeli church from the 13th century- The church

was built in the place where the Tiburtine Sibyl (Tivoli) predicted to Caesar Augustus the coming of Jesus.

Piazza Campidoglio- A Square which was designed by Michelangelo, surrounded by palaces in which today there are art museums. From the square there is an observation on the Foro Romano.

 

 

 

 

  Return to the Piazza-Venezia, and continue in Via Nazionle- a street which filled with shops- toward Piazza della

  Repubblica- in this place were built in the years 295-306 the Terme di Diocleziano- the most sumptuous that were

  in Rome. There were also libraries, auditoriums of concerts, galleries, gardens and fountains. The place flaked after

  the ruin of the aqueduct that transferred water to the place, in 538. Today situated there a fountain- Fontana dlla

  Naiadi and a church-Santa Maria degli Angelli that was designed by Michelangelo.

  Transportation: Metro line A.

 

  *Before arriving to Piazza della Repubblica, it's possible to turn right from Via Nazionle to Via A. Depretis and to

  go a little until reaching to Santa Maria Maggiore church. This is one of the 4 main basilicas in Rome. It was built

  in the 5th century and since then had serious renovations. In 1377 was built the highest campanile in Rome. Inside

  there are impressive mosaics and the chapels are richly decorated.

  Hours: 7.00-19.00. Free entrance. For part of the chapels the entrance is by payig.  

  * Not far situated the gelateria Giovanni Fassi- see Rome- food and.

 

  In Terme di Diocleziano housed the part of the Museo Nazionale Romano - In  this museum there is a important

  collection of ancient art of Rome and Greece.

  Another part is housed in the close Palazzo Massimo. In order to arrive there you have to turn to a little street by

  the name Via Terme di Villa Peretti. The museum is situated in it's edge.

  Hours: Tuesday-Sunday  9.00-20.00. Monday closed.

 

  From Piazza della Repubblica go toward Piazza Barberini.

  *It's possible to arrive there through Via Nazionle until the 4 fountains street- Via della Quattro Fontain and turn

  right. In the junction with Via XX Settembre situated 4 fountains from the end of the 16th century, one in every

  corner of a street. Go until you arrive to Piazza Barberini.

  *It's possible to enter from Piazza della Repubblica to Via Orlando. On the way pass next to a big fountain from

   the 16th century that on top of it stands big sculpture of Moses. Immediately thereafter in the right side situated

   the Santa Maria della Vittoria - a baroque style church in which situated the beautiful Cornaro chapel.

  Hours: Every day 7.00-12.00, 15.30-19.00. Free entrance.

  At the opposite situated Santa Susanna church- which was built in the 9th century and was renovated in 15th and

  16th centuries. Turn left to Via XX Settembre, in which situated government bureaus, in the intersection with

  Via della Quattro Fontain situated 4 fountains from the end of the 16 century, one in every corner of a street.

. Continue walking. the name of the street changes to Via Quirinale.

  Pass next to 2 baroque style churches San Carlo alle Quatrro Fontane and Sant'Andrea al Quirinale. Continue

  straight and arrive to

  Piazza Quirinale- In the center of the square stands an obelisk that stood in the past next to grave of Augustus, and was transferred here according to the order of the pope Pius Vl

At this place situated Palazzo Quirinale. The palace was the summer house of the popes in the 16th-19th centuries, and today it is the official residence of the president of Italy.

Every day at 16.00 takes place the guard replacement ceremony, by a parade escorts by an orchestra.

 

 

 

 

 

 Pass the palace and go down the steps that are attached to it, continue in via del Danetteria lane, turn right near  

 the wall of the palace until you arrive to via Scuderie, continue straight, the name of the street changes to via del

 Tritine- until you arrive to Pallazo Barberini. In the past it was belong to the rich and strong Barberini family.

 Today the palace hosts the

 Galeria Nazionala d'Arte Antica. There is a collection of paintings from the 12th-18th centuries and an impressive

 illustrated ceiling.

 Hours: Tuesday-Sunday  9.00-20.00. Monday closed. By payment.

 

 From the palace continue a little in via della Quattro Fontain and arrive to

 Piazza Barberini- In the middle of the square stands Fontana Tritone. The fountain that was designed by Bernini

 in the 17th century describes Triton- Poseidon's - the god of the sea- son, sits inside an open

 shell that is held by 4 dolphins.

 Additional, small, fountain- the bee fontain- Fontana delle Api, situated at the corner of via 

 Vittorio Vento.

 Transportation: Metro line A.

 

 

 

 

 

 * From here it's possible to stroll in via Vittorio Vento, a beautiful street filled with cafes.

 

 * It's possible to exit the square to via del Tritone and go until a small street by the name via Poli, turn left and walk

 a short distance until you arrive to

 Fontana di Trevi- The baroque style fountain was ordered by the Pope Clement XIII in 1762 and was designed by

Nicols Salvi. The sculpture in the center symbolizes the ocean which is carried in a chariot that hitched to two horses and to the two Tritons.  

According to the tradition you have to throw two coins beyond your shoulder while your back is turned to the fountain: One in order that the thrower will visit again in Rome, and the second in order to carry out a wish.
